A Shift in Aggression

Most fans judge Tyler Kolek by his outside shot, but a brief moment against the 76ers suggests his real path to playing time lies at the rim. During the first quarter of the preseason loss in Philadelphia, Kolek took a hand-off from Andre Drummond and immediately attacked the basket. He drove all the way to the hoop and scored, a move that stood out as the most important play of his 17 minutes on the floor. This single drive signaled a change in approach that could shake up the bench rotation.

Daily Knicks reported that Kolek entered training camp focused on getting into the paint and becoming a scoring threat. The 25-year-old guard had previously struggled to convert his downhill attacks, finishing with points on just 31.2 percent of those drives last season. That efficiency ranked 168th out of 171 players who took a similar number of drives. However, the moment he finished at the rim on Monday showed he has the physical tools to improve that number. If he can consistently pressure the basket, he forces coach Mike Brown to reconsider his role.

The Rotation Hurdle

Kolek faces a steep climb to earn regular minutes because the Knicks have a deep backcourt. Deuce McBride, Landry Shamet, and Jose Alvarado all rank ahead of him currently. These three offer a mix of strong defense and high-volume shooting that Kolek has yet to match. According to Daily Knicks, Kolek must provide value without dominating the ball to move up the hierarchy. His passing is excellent, but the team needs more than just setup skills from a reserve guard.

The issue is not his outside shooting, which many critics overstate. Kolek made 37.5 percent of his catch-and-shoot threes and 39 percent of his pull-up triples last season. The real problem is volume. He averaged fewer than six three-point attempts per 36 minutes, which is too low for a player who cannot always hold the ball. Empire Sports Media noted that Landry Shamet made a strong case for himself by scoring 10 points in just 11 minutes against the 76ers. Shamet converted two of five three-pointers, proving that a reserve guard can keep the offense moving with simple shooting.

A Clear Path Forward

For Kolek to get meaningful minutes, he must show he can score without needing the ball in his hands for long stretches. A shift in his half-court approach to reach the rack would be fundamental. Daily Knicks stated that this shift could be the difference between playing regular minutes and staying a sparingly used reserve. The Knicks have a crowded rotation, so a small improvement in aggression could open the door.
