Geno Smith will not face charges stemming from a June incident at his Florida home. The Davie Police Department said Tuesday that its investigation is no longer active.
The department’s report pointed to the absence of witnesses and surveillance footage, and noted that neither Smith nor the other person involved provided the follow-up statements investigators had requested. Without those, the responding officer could not establish what happened. Nobody was arrested or detained at the scene.
A supplemental case report obtained by ESPN put it plainly: “No further investigative steps can be reasonably taken with the information presently available.” The department left room to revisit the case if new information or evidence surfaces.
Smith has not addressed the matter publicly, and neither have the Jets. The 35-year-old quarterback could still face league discipline if the NFL determines he violated the personal conduct policy. A league spokesman said the NFL is aware of the situation and that the club has been in contact with the league office.
Smith is in his second run in New York. He played for the Jets from 2013 through 2016 and returned in March by way of a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders.
