The Giants just lost their most versatile receiver before the season even started, and the timing is brutal. Calvin Austin looked like he’d locked down the starting slot job after the team let Wan’Dale Robinson walk in free agency. Now, that roster spot is wide open again, and the math on the 53-man squad has shifted overnight.
A Brutal Break in Practice
Austin went down without contact during Tuesday’s practice, and the scene was ugly. According to reports, Austin suffered immediate pain and a knee buckling while executing a 1-on-1 in-cut route versus Deonte Banks. He was carted off with a right knee injury that could be serious. This was a devastating blow for a player who’d worked his way into head coach John Harbaugh’s good graces just days prior.
Harbaugh had praised Austin’s unique skill set only on Monday. “It’s pretty clear all the things he does well,” Harbaugh said. The appealing aspect of Calvin is his ability to cover all three spots. Any of those positions can accommodate his movement. That versatility is exactly what the Giants needed to replace Robinson’s production. Now they have to find it elsewhere or hope a miracle happens in rehab.
With Austin out, the narrative around Odell Beckham Jr changes instantly. The Giants signed Austin to fill the void left by Robinson, but that plan is now in tatters. Big Blue View notes that Austin had been one of quarterback Jaxson Dart’s favorite targets throughout training camp. A significant offensive role and a guaranteed roster spot were expected for him.
That role might now belong to Beckham. The reality was that there simply might not have been room for the former star until now. Although Beckham remained a sentimental choice for roster inclusion, the figures did not align. Austin’s injury flips the script. The Giants can no longer justify keeping both a healthy rookie and an unproven veteran if they want to carry extra depth at other positions.
What the Numbers Show
Austin showed he could do it all in Saturday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. His stats included a 21-yard rush, 24 yards on two receptions, and 29 yards across two punt returns. He proved he could handle the slot and the outside, something Harbaugh noted about his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
