Geno Smith owns up to the chaos that threatened to derail the Jets before training camp even started. The quarterback admits his three run-ins with Florida police this summer created a massive distraction for a team trying to find its rhythm. He stepped up to address the rumors directly as veterans reported for duty on Tuesday. This is exactly what a leader should do when the noise gets too loud.

The Distraction Was Real

Smith knows his off-field issues hurt the team’s hard work during the offseason. He told reporters he “really hate[s] the fact that something I was a part of what could have been a distraction for this team, my teammates, this organization, because a lot of hard work has been put in,” according to reports. The timeline is messy and involves three separate incidents with police in Florida. Cops showed up at his home in June after a woman claimed he assaulted her, per ESPN. She posted video online saying he “ran outside and attacked me,” but no charges were filed. He was also pulled over twice for driving with bad tags and speeding.

The team had built real momentum during OTAs before this mess blew up. Smith said he “really feel[s] like coming out of OTAs, I felt like we built some positive momentum and I’m really happy with where this team is right now,” per ESPN. That momentum matters more than the headlines. The Jets need a clean slate to get back to winning. Smith has talked to coach Aaron Glenn and veteran leaders about the situation to clear the air. He wants to move past the drama and focus on the field.

Charges Dropped, But Trust Must Be Earned

Police investigated the domestic dispute but decided not to press any charges against the quarterback. The woman had a small cut on her hand and a bruise on her arm, but the report noted “no observable injuries to her facial,” according to ESPN. A knot on his head and scratches on Smith’s face were also present. While the law cleared him, the public perception took a hit. The video went viral and made the Jets look messy right before camp.

Smith is 35 years old and needs to prove he can handle the pressure without drama. He said he is “happy that I’m able to put this behind me; I’m looking forward to moving forward and continuing to build day by day with my guys,” per reports. Training camp began for the Jets on Tuesday, with Wednesday morning marking the start of practice. The team cannot afford another week of off-field noise. They need to win games, not fight court cases.

Can He Stay Focused?

The real test starts now that the cameras are rolling at practice. Smith says he “really appreciate being a part of this team, a part of this organization again, and I look forward to building every single day in training camp, getting better as a team, getting better as a player, and continuing the positive momentum,” according to reports. He has the right attitude, but actions speak louder than words. If he stays out of trouble and plays like a starter, the Jets can finally move on.

Fans are tired of the drama and just want to see the team play. The Jets have a chance to be good this year if the quarterback keeps his head in the game.
