Giants fans want Jonathan Taylor, but experts warn the price is too high and the team isn't ready. Here is why the deal could backfire.

The Roster Move That Stands Alone

The New York Giants have made a clear decision regarding their young wide receiver. They waived Jalin Hyatt to meet the 53-man roster limit, yet they plan to keep him. This specific action was reported by RotoBaller NFL. Hyatt will return to the team as part of their practice squad, according to Big Blue View. This twist makes him the only draft pick cut on Sunday to get brought back. The team also waived Evan Neal, Darius Muasau, and Eric Gray. But only Hyatt gets a second chance to stay in the fold.

Other teams moved fast to grab the other players. The New England Patriots claimed Darius Muasau off waivers. That leaves Hyatt as the sole exception to the rule. He was a third-round pick in 2023 when the Giants traded up to get him. He won the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the top receiver in college football at Tennessee. The organization saw big potential back then. Now they are betting on that potential one more time.

Production Numbers Tell a Hard Story

The statistics from his time in the Big Apple are hard to ignore. In three seasons with the Giants, Hyatt has just 36 receptions for 470 yards. He has zero touchdowns to his name. The numbers show a lack of impact on the field. He has barely played the past two seasons. He caught just 13 balls during that stretch. These are not the numbers of a star player. They are the numbers of someone who has struggled to stay on the field.

Physical issues have played a major role in his struggles. In West Virginia, Hyatt sustained a leg injury while participating in training camp. During a drill, a defensive player took him down. He has not practiced since that time. The injury stopped his momentum before it could really start. The team saw a player who could not stay healthy. Now they are asking if he can stay healthy enough to help the practice squad.

Why Keep a Player With No Touchdowns?

The Giants are taking a calculated risk with this move. They waived him to clear space, but they did not want to lose him completely. Bringing him to the practice squad lets them keep his rights. It gives him time to heal without leaving the organization. If he gets healthy, he might earn a spot on the main roster later. If he does not, the team can let him go when the season ends. It is a low-cost way to hold onto a former top pick.

This move shows the team values his speed and size. They traded up to get him, which means they still see value in his talent. But the lack of production is a real problem. The Giants need receivers who can catch the ball and score. Hyatt has not shown he can do that yet. The practice squad is a waiting room. He needs to prove he is ready to play. The Giants have given him a lifeline, but the clock is ticking.
