Stearns Admits Mets Mistakes After Disappointing 2026 Season

David Stearns owns the Mets' failures, citing an "uncapped downside" and poor first-base play. The GM faces a tough road to fix the roster.

This season has been flat-out disappointing for those of us Mets fans; however, even as the season comes to an end, things just keep getting worse.

Just about every Mets fan out there is furious with David Stearns over his just terrible offseason moves, like letting Pete Alonso go.

This season, Alonso has racked up 36 home runs and an American League-leading 101 RBIs, and since being in Baltimore, has shown little sign of decline. As the Orioles are fighting to get into the American League Wild Card race, the Mets will be starting vacation at the end of the month.

On Tuesday night, Pete Alonso returned to Citi Field to a warm reception from fans. In the ninth inning, Alonso smacked a solo, game-tying home run. That set up an Orioles rally that scored three runs in the 11th inning, handing the Mets another embarrassing loss.

Fan frustration hit a breaking point after Alonso, the Mets’ franchise home run leader, crushed one over the fence—only this time, he was wearing a different uniform.

The stadium erupted into “Fire Stearns” chants.

But the hits keep coming; owner Steve Cohen has said he isn’t planning to fire Stearns and that he believes in him.

Back in July, Cohen told the New York Post that he is not going to dump Stearns, who is in year three of his five-year contract, despite being responsible for a second terrible season.

“We’ll figure out what changes that need to be made,” Cohen said. “But the change that’s not gonna be made is moving David out at this point. I’m just not gonna do it.”
