Baseball America has handed out a major nod to a prospect the Mets acquired in the Freddy Peralta deal. The publication identified Aidan Smith as the best defensive outfielder in the entire New York Mets farm system. Smith was one of three players the Mets received from the Tampa Bay Rays, along with Emilien Pitre and Gary Gill Hill, according to Rising Apple. While Pitre looks closer to the majors, Smith’s glove work sets him apart from the rest of the group.
A Glove That Stands Out
The Mets organization has a history of valuing defensive specialists under the leadership of David Stearns. Smith fits that mold perfectly with his ability to cover ground in center field. His stats show he can run well too, having stolen 27 bases in just 30 attempts this past season. He posted a solid line of .252/.350/.424 in the minors with a nice power surge late in the year. While batting .321, he hit 5 home runs in just 99 plate appearances in Brooklyn.
Strikeouts Remain a Concern
There is a significant downside to Smith’s game that fans need to watch closely. He struck out 111 times in only 80 total games during the 2026 season. The year before, he fanned 143 times in 102 games, which is a troubling trend for a hitter. His performance against right-handed pitchers was strong with a .766 OPS, but he struggled mightily against lefties with a .621 mark. This split makes him a risky choice for a full-time role or even a standard platoon partner against left-handed pitching. He is more like Nick Morabito in that he brings specific skills rather than a balanced profile.
A Clear Path to the Majors
Despite the strikeout issues, Smith’s defensive value gives him a real shot at a future roster spot. He could form a platoon with A.J. Ewing in center field, which would allow the Mets to hide his weaknesses. MLB Pipeline currently ranks him as the 15th best prospect in the system, right behind Morabito at number 12.
