Forget the quarterback drama for a second. The Jets actually have a roster built for speed and youth, and the numbers back it up. ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz recently ranked the team’s players under 25 and found a surprising result. The Jets sit at number seven overall in the league. That is a massive jump from where they stood just one year ago. Last season, this same group ranked 28th. The turnaround is real and it starts with the young blood on the field.
A Defensive Wall of Youth
The defense leads this charge with some serious talent. Edge rusher David Bailey is the face of the group and he will only turn 23 in August. He was the number two pick and he is already the leader of the youth movement. The secondary is just as young and hungry. Safety Malachi Moore is 24, while cornerback Azareye’h Thomas is 22. Nickelback D’Angelo Ponds brings even more youth at just 21 years old. This is a defensive unit that will be fast and physical for a long time.
Offense has its own strong bookends on the line. Left tackle Olu Fashanu is 23, and right tackle Armand Membou is 22. They protect the pocket with a size and skill that older teams lack. Wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. is 22, and Adonai Mitchell is only 23 after his trade from the Colts. Tight ends Kenyon Sadiq and Mason Taylor are both 22. The roster is filled with players who are still learning the game but ready to play it hard.
The Quarterback Problem Remains
There is one glaring hole that stops this group from winning right now. According to Gang Green Nation, the Jets are the top ranked team without a young quarterback. That is a tough truth to swallow for any fan base. The only option is fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik, who is 22. He is not the star the team needs to lead this core to the playoffs. The rest of the roster is elite for the age group, but the signal-caller position is a major question mark. A team cannot win with great kids if the leader cannot throw the ball.
Marquis Hayes represents the other side of the roster coin. He is 27 and has not played in a regular season game yet. His time with the team might be running out. The staff kept him on the practice squad and active for the end of the year, but he has to prove he can play now. The Jets are moving fast with their young stars, and veterans who cannot step up will get cut. Hayes needs to make the team this year or he is gone. The window is closing for older players who have not shown they belong.
The draft picks coming in 2027 will decide the future. The team has three additional first-round picks to fill the gaps. They can fix the quarterback spot if they pick wisely. The young core is ready to win. The only thing missing is the guy who throws the ball. The trajectory is set for a quick rise, but the right move is still needed.
