The stage is set for another Bronx showdown. The Yankees and Red Sox are locked into a 2026 Wild Card Series for the second year in a row. New York secured the top AL wild-card seed earlier this week. Boston clinched the number two spot after a Friday win over the Cubs. This three-game set starts September 29 at Yankee Stadium. It feels like a repeat of last year, where New York took the series in three games. But this time, the Bronx Bombers are dealing with much more than just a bitter rival.

The Injury Bug Threatens the Lineup

A healthy roster is the only way to win this. Right now, the Yankees are in real trouble. The team is facing the possibility of playing without Aaron Judge. The star is currently working through a moderate calf strain. Contreras, out since September 17 after a pitch struck his right hand, returned Sunday as Boston’s DH and is expected to play, so the Yankees’ Judge situation is a bigger concern.

History Favors the Bold

This rivalry carries a heavy weight of past drama. The two clubs have met in several legendary postseason moments. The Yankees took the 1999 ALCS in five games. Later, the 2003 series featured a dramatic 11th-inning walk-off home run from Aaron Boone. However, the 2004 season showed how quickly things can flip. The Red Sox famously won a series after trailing 3-0. That historic comeback helped Boston win their first title since 1918.

The recent years have been just as intense. Boston won the 2018 ALDS and the 2021 Wild Card Game. By securing victories in Games 2 and 3 of the 2025 Wild Card Series, the Yankees won it, evening the teams’ all-time postseason series at 3-3. This season, the Yankees held their own, winning seven of the 13 games played against Boston. It is a tight matchup that anyone can win if the stars stay on the field.

A Difficult Path to the ALDS

The road ahead is not easy for the winner. The AL East champion Rays are waiting in the ALDS. New York has a tough task ahead. The Yankees lineup relies on lefties, but Boston brings a lot of left-handed pitching to the mix. This could create huge problems if the Yankees are missing Judge. According to the New York Post, the Yankees narrowly won the season series against Boston with a 7-6 record. They need to find that same edge in October.
