Some people questioned the Jets’ decision to bring in Joseph Ossai. They looked at his modest sack totals from Cincinnati and saw risk. Aaron Glenn sees something different. The Jets coach called him a “damn good player” after a strong day at practice. That kind of endorsement from the head coach carries weight.

Glenn Loves the Energy

The Jets defense was active during red-zone work on Monday. Ossai stood out. He stuffed runs and chased the ball with a high motor. Glenn told reporters he has liked Ossai’s consistency since OTAs and that other players feed off his energy. “I love that player. I think he’s a damn good player,” Glenn said. He also noted that whenever Ossai is on the field, he brings juice and excitement. That matches what the New York Post and other outlets reported from the session.

Money Talks, but Performance Matters

Critics pointed to the three-year, $34.5 million contract and Ossai’s 14½ career sacks in four seasons with the Bengals, plus limited starts. On paper it looked like a bet. Monday’s practice pushed back against that view. Ossai was full-go after returning last week and made multiple plays, including a sack of Cade Klubnik and a tackle for loss on Braelon Allen. A player who can pressure the quarterback and set the edge in the red zone is exactly what the Jets want.

Teammates are already responding to Ossai’s style. The session at Florham Park had a physical edge. Glenn acknowledged there are still things Ossai needs to clean up, but the foundation looks solid. The coach sees a fit in the system. If Ossai keeps producing at this level, the early skepticism will fade.
