Abdul Carter wants to be the best defender in the NFL, and he says he can do it. This isn’t just rookie talk from a high draft pick. He has the stats and the attitude to back up such a massive claim. The New York Giants are hoping he lives up to his potential after a rough first year, but Carter is aiming higher than just impact status.

A Goal That Sounds Crazy

When asked about his targets for the season, Carter did not hold back. “I want to be Defensive Player of the Year,” Carter said, when asked about his goals. Most rookies would settle for just making the roster or getting a few sacks. Carter is looking at the top prize right out of the gate. He knows the road is hard, but he trusts his ability to get there.

“I know what I’m capable of. If I commit effort, have self-belief, rely on myself, trust my teammates, and trust my coaching staff, I can become anyone I desire, I know. That kind of confidence usually gets crushed by reality. But Carter is showing signs that he might actually be different from the pack.

Work Ethic Finally Shows

Head coach John Harbaugh has seen a big change in the second-year player. Harbaugh noted that Carter has shown “amazing work ethic and a really deep determination” thus far this season. Last year, Carter faced questions after missing practice and being late to meetings. Those issues led to benchings that hurt his early momentum. Now, he is working harder than ever to prove those doubts wrong.

According to Big Blue View, Carter has maintained a steady role in the offensive backfield throughout the initial days of camp. Thursday saw him credited with several sacks, and he secured an additional one on Friday. This isn’t just luck. He is moving around the line, working over guards and centers to confuse blockers. That flexibility is key for a top pass rusher.

Beating the Best Tackle

Carter is not just rushing against average linemen. He faces off against Andrew Thomas, who ranks among the top left tackles across the league. The battles between the two have been the highlights of camp so far. Thomas, who is known for his skill, admits Carter is getting better. “He can work edges really well,” Thomas said on Thursday. Thomas also noted that Carter is using his power more and stringing moves together better than before.

Thomas wasn’t happy about losing a few plays to the young rusher. “I never get excited when I lose,” Thomas said. But Carter sees this as a chance to grow. “Andrew, he’s the best of the best. Whenever we’re going against each other, we get the most out of each other.” If Carter can beat Thomas consistently, the rest of the league will have to take notice.

To reach his goal, Carter knows he has to beat the top players. “To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.” He also knows that doing one good play isn’t enough to make a name. “They make one play, and they’re the best. You do a second, you’re All-Pro.” Carter is proving he can do more than one play. The Giants fans should get ready for a breakout season.
