Towns Wants To Stay, But Knicks Must Fix The Apron First

Karl-Anthony Towns says he wants to re-sign, but the second apron rules could block a $276 million deal. Here is why the Knicks face a tough choice.

The New York Knicks just lost a huge piece of their rotation puzzle. For months, the front office worked to bring Moussa Cisse to Manhattan. Now, that door is slammed shut. The Dallas Mavericks decided not to waive the 24-year-old center, which means the Knicks can no longer sign him. This is a massive blow to a bench that desperately needs more size and rim protection.

The Mavericks Keep Their Depth

The plan in New York was clear. Back in July, a two-year, $4.7 million offer sheet was signed by the team for Cisse. However, Dallas used their right to match that deal to keep him. Yahoo Sports reports that the Mavericks are retaining center Moussa Cisse, whose 2026-27 season contract will become fully guaranteed within minutes. By letting the October 1 deadline pass without releasing him, Dallas ensured his $2.185 million salary is locked in for next year. This move kills any chance of New York getting that cheap, high-upside talent they wanted.

A Missed Chance For Rim Protection

Losing Cisse hurts because of what he brings to the floor. He isn’t just a body; he is an efficient defender. In 38 games as a rookie, he averaged 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in only 13.9 minutes. He even hit a 57.4% field goal rate. Without him, the rotation looks thin behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond. The Knicks needed his youth and athleticism to help cover mistakes.

No More Waiting On Dallas

Fans can stop checking the transaction wire for this name. There is no magic trick left to bring him here. Ian Begley settled the matter for those awaiting Cisse updates by saying, “you can head to bed … I would be shocked if DAL waived him.” The Mavericks are already heading to Macau with a full roster of 15 standard contracts. In New York, Coach Mike Brown admitted the team’s need for more size during Wednesday’s practice, saying, “We’re looking at that position heavily.” But with Dallas refusing to budge, the Knicks must find a new way to fix their frontcourt.
