The New York Jets just took a massive swing on a player the entire scouting world ignored. Nate Lynn is a 24-year-old edge defender who was a zero-star recruit in high school. He opted to attend William & Mary instead of the few schools that offered him a chance. Now he is wearing the green and white, and the preseason results are already loud. According to Gang Green Nation, Lynn has made an immediate impact in the preseason games so far.
From All-American to Undrafted
Most fans know the story of the big names. They forget the guys who had to fight for every single inch of grass. Lynn was not invited to the combine after college. He went undrafted out of William & Mary in 2024. Selected as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Lions. He had a solid training camp there. In his first preseason game, Lynn made an impact as he had a sack. He was initially credited with a strip sack. That kind of play gets you noticed fast.
His college stats show a clear upward trend. As a freshman, he started as a rotational lineman. He registered 14 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss in 12 games. His second season was disrupted by the pandemic. A truncated schedule meant the Tribe played only three games. Seven tackles, one for a loss, and a broken pass were still achieved. Then came the breakout. Lynn earned first team FCS all-American honors in 2021. Across 10 games, he tallied 52 tackles, 12 sacks, and six forced fumbles. That is the kind of production that scares offensive linemen.
The Physical Profile That Works
Size matters in the NFL, but Lynn checks the boxes. He is listed at 6’3 and 256 pounds. He looks the part of a modern edge rusher. He was a productive player again in 2022. His stats included 61 tackles, eight sacks, and four forced fumbles. He earned third team all-American honors that year. The next year, he did it again. In 2023, Lynn recorded 58 tackles and eight sacks. He earned second team all-American honors. First team all-CAA selections came in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Consistency is the hardest thing to find in college football.
Lynn is yet to make his NFL debut in a regular season game. But the path from undrafted to starter is paved with work. He has proven he can play at a high level. The Jets need pass rushers who can win one-on-one battles. Lynn has shown he can get to the quarterback. The team signed him recently to add depth to the defensive line. According to Gang Green Nation, he has a long history of getting sacks. He forced six fumbles in just ten games during his junior year. That is a turnover rate few players can match.
The Jets have spent big on other parts of the roster. This move costs very little but could pay off huge. Lynn brings a chip on his shoulder. He went from a zero-star recruit to a three-time all-CAA selection. He proved he does not need a high draft pick to succeed. The Detroit Lions gave him a chance, and he took it. Now the Jets have him. He is young at 24 years old. He has room to grow into a starter role.
If Lynn can translate that college production to the regular season, he will become a key play. The regular season is coming soon, and we will see if this zero-star recruit can become a star.
