He is a high-leverage reliever that many teams need. Keeping him when the team is this far from the playoffs makes little sense.
The Mets need to be aggressive. They are one of the teams that faced a crackdown by the league for using unauthorized AI programs. Interim manager Andy Green said the Mets “remain fully compliant” with league rules. But compliance does not fix a losing record. The team needs to clear cap space and get value for players who might leave anyway. Trading Holmes could bring back young talent or picks that help the 2027 roster.
Offense Fails to Show Up
The offense was non-existent against the Phillies. Only Tyrone Taylor managed to hit the pitcher Jesús Luzardo. Taylor hit a solo homer in the second inning to make it 2-1. That was the only run the Mets scored all night. The rest of the lineup did not put up much of a fight. Kodai Senga came in relief and walked J.T. Realmuto, but the damage was already done.
Manager Andy Green pushed his luck by bringing Senga back in the next inning. The game was 6-1 before an out was recorded. This was just another run of the mill pathetic performance by this 2026 team. The team completely fell apart in the fifth inning. Manaea gave up a lead-off home run to Trea Turner and then walked Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber scored on a single by Alec Bohm. That made it 4-1 and the game was out of reach.
Time to Make a Move
The Mets cannot keep hoping for a miracle. They need to face reality. The Phillies are winning, and the Mets are losing games they should not. Trading Holmes is the smart play. It stops the bleeding and sets up the next year. Per reports, the trade rumors surrounding Holmes continue to swirl as his interesting market develops. That market will not stay hot forever. Teams need arms now. The Mets have one. They should sell high.
Francisco Lindor made another error in the inning, but the team escaped without further damage. It was enough to lose the game. The weather should be clear tomorrow so the Mets will be forced to play the finale in Philadelphia. But the result will likely be the same unless something changes. The front office must act before the window closes.
